전시회 설명

아타락시아(Ataraxia)는 고대 그리스 철학의 개념으로 정신적 욕망을 배제하고 내면의 평정을 지향하는 인간의 이상적 상태를 가리킨다. 욕망은 인류를 발전시키는 원동력이 되기도 하고 때로는 갈등을 일으키는 촉매가 되어 파멸에 이르기도 하는데, 결국 이 욕망의 끝은 아타락시아로 귀결될 수 있다고 보았다. 이러한 철학적 사유를 입체적으로 시각화하고자 인간의 욕망으로 인해 드러나는 다양한 감정들을 하나씩 봉인하여 포장하고 담아냄으로써 표현하였다. 투영된 감정의 봉인들이 모여서 평온의 구조를 만들어 낸다. 개구리는 부지런히 뛰어다니는 이미지와 뒷다리를 움츠렸다 뛰어오르는 도약의 모습에서 인간미를 가지고 있다고 보았고, 각양각색의 감정표현을 통해 다양한 물성을 가진 매체들을 결합한 조각작품으로 의인화하였다. 3D 영상설치 작품에서는 아타락시아를 망각에 비유하여 감정의 흐름과 소멸의 이미지로 나타내고자 하였다. Ataraxia, a concept in ancient Greek philosophy, refers to the ideal human state that excludes mental desire and aspires to inner tranquility. Desire has at times served as a driving force for the advancement of humanity, yet it has also acted as a catalyst for conflict and even led to ruin. Ultimately, I believe that the cessation of desire leads to Ataraxia. To give form to these philosophical reflections, I seek to visualize the emotions born of human desire by sealing, packaging, and containing them one by one. These encapsulated emotions converge to create a structure of calm. Frogs, perceived as embodying humanity in their earnest movements and in the leap propelled from crouched hind legs, are personified in sculptural works that integrate diverse materials and physical properties, each expressing different emotional states. In the 3D video installation, Ataraxia is further evoked through the metaphor of oblivion, expressed as a visual flow of emotions moving toward vanishing. (Eunyoung Chu, Artist Statement)
